Guest bryanjess Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 hi can anyone enlighten me on why my gal somokes so much when i pull away hot or cold i get heavy black smoke more than you would normaly get from turbo boost and it keeps on smoking a bit after speed up also i am only getting about 28 to 30 mpg some of you guys are saying you are getting 40 plus mpg car W reg 1.9 tdi diesel please help i cant afford to go out much at this mpg thanks bryan Quote
El Dingo Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 I can't resist... Rant starts>>>>Because Diesels are crap? I have a Audi A4 diesel (as well as the Galaxy petrol) and when I pull away there's a whole cloud of smoke/particulates. Our Government is sitting waiting for everyone to switch over to diesel when suddenly they will pretend to suddenly realise the pollution caused and whack the tax right up (to be fair, they already tax diesel higher - see below). My A4 averages around 40 mpg (1,400kg) so if you are running around town, 30 mpg (nearly 2,000kg) isn't so bad. And it's no fun either - I look forward to driving the Galaxy at the weekend (if I can prise the keys out of my wife's hands) - even when the Galaxy shows an average 20 mpg or worse. At least petrol is cheaper than diesel (but not, curiously, in Germany, for example, where the tax is less). <<<<Rant stops. I think that your mpg sounds normal for a Galaxy used around town. Quote
johnb80 Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 No it doesn't sound right at all. My daily trip to work is only 2 miles each way (yes I could walk but I have a lot of stuff to carry), mine doesn't smoke at all, it never does less than 42 mpg going to work and back and it does seem to perform well. The diesel pisses all over the petrol torque, fuel consumption and depreciations wise. How you can think that your vehicle emitting nearly 50% more CO2 into the atmosphere and a fuel consumption nearly doubled across the range is more environmentally friendly, beggars belief. 2.3 petrol is the CRAP one to have, almost the same consumption as the VR6 and similar performance to a frugal diesel. Yeah, what a sensible choice  :D  <Rant begins :D > Regards - John B Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 2.3 petrol is CRAP <Rant begins  > Regards - John B 2.3 maybe crap but 5.7 aint :D Dodge Durango 4X4 5.7 hemi Quote
johnb80 Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 Shut up, you know I'm jealous ! Just had a go in my mates new discovery, absolutely amazing silky smooth v8 auto, pulls like a train, handles well, very, very quiet. When I got out he then told me it was a V6 diesel. I had to look under the bonnet, I could not beleive it. No diesel clatter at all and the sound..... incredible. How is it going across the pond? do you need an assistant  I just don't see the point of the 2.3 at all, if you can afford the fuel and you want petrol may as well have the VR6 and have some fun and a nice sounding engine. If performance doesn't bother you then get a diesel and save loadsa money but a 2.3......... Regards - JB Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 Discovery?'s that a toy car out here  the Durango is compared to some of the beasts out here! how's it's going out here? it's so laid backed! I'll not want to leave! we dont start work till 8 and then drive 1,2 hours drive to site, fit a lift, drive to the diner, have lunch, drive to the next job, fit it, drive to a bar, sink a couple of beer's, grab a bite to eat and go home, get washed and changed and then back out for the night :D the pace of life is so different! in the UK we work 11,12 hour days 6.7 days a week, they do a 5 day week and 8,9 hours a day max! the people where I am are so freindly it's scary! you walk into a bar, sit the counter and strike a conversation with a total stranger, and by the end of the evening you know each other kids names, photo's are handed round and dates to meet up later in the week for another drink are made  so far I have only made three driveing mistakes! driveing on the right through a car park! parking faceing the wrong way on a street and not stopping for a school bus :D a big no no over here! here for another couple of weeks so there's plenty of time to make a few more :D got to out now an Irish bar is on the menu tonight so dont expect me up to early tomorrow :D Quote
Guest MATT Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 Dodge Durango 4X4 5.7 hemi awwwwwwwwww! i saw one of them the other day - I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!! there bloody MASIVE too MATT Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Dodge Durango 4X4 5.7 hemi awwwwwwwwww! i saw one of them the other day - I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!! there bloody MASIVE too MATT Just got back in from a night out 2.15 pm  and in the car park are pick ups twice the size of the Durango! a Dodge Ram, a Lincon Mark LT, and couple of F150 pick up's, :D the place I just left had two Caddy Escalade EXT's and a H2 Hummer in the parking lot ! small car's are not to be seen very often here! the Galaxy would be classed as a mini van :D compared to the size of the average twin cab pick up they drive around in here Quote
Guest MATT Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 ...a Dodge Ram... Oops! sorry, i meant that one, the dodge RAM, still want one though! MATT  Quote
El Dingo Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 I didn't say it was sensible :D Rattly nasty diesels that don't rev! And the 2.3 is much more economical than the 2.8 (with auto box), but to be honest I'd have preferred a 2.8. (he he he) Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Hmmm... Lets see... Nasty Ford lump with old technology 4 speed auto, Or one of the torquiest diesels around with a 5 speed auto?? No choice really... You may have saved a bit of Quote
johnb80 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 I didn't say it was sensible :D Rattly nasty diesels that don't rev! :o And the 2.3 is much more economical than the 2.8 (with auto box), but to be honest I'd have preferred a 2.8. (he he he) Diesels that wont rev, why on earth do you want it to? it has more torque at just above tickover than your weakling 2.3 flat out. Still if it keeps you happy thats fine, it gives us all a laugh. You mention MPG's well lets have a look, urban cycle V6=19.2, 2.3=20.2 Extra Urban V6=33.2, 2.3=36.2 and combined V6=26.2, 2.3=28.0 So now lets move on to a little maths. Assuming 10,000 miles per year the fuel used would cost V6= Quote
El Dingo Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 johnb80 - what nonsense! The 2.3 will actually out-accelerate the diesel thanks to the fact that it revs. I often hear the 'massive waves of torque' argument put forward to justify buying a car with an old technology rattly, smelly, lorry engine. Look at the latest petrol developments (like a 1.4 that puts out 170bhp in the Golf GT). Diesels are just no fun. Like I said, I would have preferred a 2.8. And yes, I saved thousands over a diesel model. And like I also said, it's not sensible, but that's the way I like it (ah ha, ah ha). And I don't care about the maths either - I just like the Galaxy and I like the 2.3 engine. The 2.8 is very thirsty in auto version (and we wanted auto). When you snap your cam belt your maths won't add up anymore. (sorry, I'll stop now... ;) ) Quote
johnb80 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 My cambelt wont be snapping thanks, I have it serviced properly. You probably haven't heard of coil packs failing on petrols but I'm sure you will experience it, coil packs arn't a scheduled service item. Add to that idle problems when the air valve gets gummed up and there's more. When you look at the Ford figures the differences with V6 auto v 2.3 auto is pretty much the same i.e. Quote
El Dingo Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Coil packs not on 2.3... Ooops! Well known VAG 1.6/1.8/1.8 issue. Anyway, this has gone on too far - I apologise for winding up the diesel enthusiasts here - I just hate diesels, and I wish I'd got the 1.8T A4 instead of the TDi. You are right johnb80, in everyday use the diesel will be quicker. I still don't want one though. Quote
johnb80 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 You can't shut me up that easy. Are you sure you don't have coil packs on a 2.3? every one I've had dealings with has had them and theyre well known a) to fail and  for the wiring to bake and crack. Must admit it's not been on Gals but on Scorpio's but it is the same engine. The 2.3 is the smoothest 4 potter petrol I've ever driven by a long, long way. Caio - JB Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 ...was that KO or Ciao? ;) Hello jb, still knocking the chaps with petrols? Some of us can afford to run our cars you know. You'll be having a go at Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Jaguar drivers next (bloody showoffs swanking around in their gas guzzling execs!) Face it mate, some people are perfectly happy to pay for their fuel in return for peace, comfort, smoothness and civility. Try some... Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Im stepping in the ring. Whats all this talk about large engine, 0-60 times, top speeds? Guys - the limit is 70, and we all have to stop at the traffic lights. If you feel you must drive your cars at the limit and squeeze every last ounce of energy out of them just to say that you can - then its reality check time. Im 20, male and grew up wanting a GTO my whole life - but untill I have one, im not going to pretend that I do! The insurance companies tell me that im a 'hazard' because of my natural drive to go fast and take risks. Some of us can control this, and dont try to make out that we have supercars - when we have the lower price band, unrefined, low-tuned engines of the world. ITS A PEOPLE CARRIER! Quote
widu13 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 My 130 is like siht off a shovel and using my special recipe diesel costs 40p litre, so driving like a maniac I still get 100 mpg at forecourt prices!! Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 If its that good, why dont you make your million and sell it to Shell? siht off a shovel and using my special recipe diesel costs 40p litre, so driving like a maniac I still get 100 mpg Perhaps a tad optimistic? Thought so Quote
steve67car Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 ding ding sorry thought it was a boxing match petrol against diesel but sorry there aint a a clear winner and never will be but i drive a petrol sharan if i had the extra 2.5 k a diesel was and it had a low 43 k on the clock i'd buy it but hay horses for courses and all that any how just got a new toy v6 2.8 3 door and torque that will make the vag tdi quiver and scream for its mum BUT 18MPG AND LOVING IT so if you winge about petrol/diesel prices buy a poxy scooter and get wet lol  ;) :o Quote

Thought so 'cos it's avoiding the road duty and slightly illegal  , but 100 mpg is spot on. For every 40 mpg that you get, for the same money I'm getting 100 mpg. Been doin' it for 3 years now. So far as where this lot came from somebody (El Dingo) made the statement that diesels were crap and he drives a minging 2.3 ! Fight Fight Fight, common you lot, don't let these wimpy petrol heads get their way :o Caio - JB Quote
davec Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 love my diesel but only get about 30ish round town over 40 on a good run it sure aint slow tho Quote
steve67car Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 whats the torque in lb per feet but i aint slagging oil burners as i said if i had the extra cash my shaza would be just that an oil burners as diesel is free to me through a few mates but i love v6 and rear wheel drive and pure grunt it gives Quote
